Fashion house Gucci is one of the world’s most beloved luxury brands.
With the House of Gucci movie coming out on November 24, 2021, detectives are curious about who exactly the famous fashion label belongs to.
Who founded the fashion company Gucci?
The Gucci fashion house was founded in 1921 in Florence, Italy, by Guccio Gucci.
Fashion brand Gucci was initially the only store in Florence that sold leather goods, handbags, gloves, wallets and other accessories.
Guccio Gucci died on January 2, 1953.
After his death, Gucci shared his company’s shares between three of his five sons, Aldo, Rodolfo and Vasco.
Does Guccio’s Gucci Family Still Own Gucci?
Aldo, Rodolfo and Vasco opened stores in New York, London and Paris, France, throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
Vasco died in 1974, Rodolfo died in 1983. Rodolfo’s son, Maurizio Gucci, inherited from Rodolfo.
Maurizio became the majority shareholder of Gucci, which deepened a family feud with his uncle Aldo Gucci, who owned the other half of the fashion business.
For most of the 1980s, Aldo and Maurizio were in a legal battle over who would become president of Gucci. The post went to Maurizio, who took control.
Who owns the Gucci fashion brand?
In 1993, Maurizio sold the fashion brand to InvestCorp. It was the sale that ended the Gucci family’s full ownership in Gucci.
Following the sale of Maurizio Gucci to InvestCorp, he was shot by an assassin for hire in 1995.
His ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, was found guilty of successfully organizing the attack on Maurizio.
Since 1999, the luxury goods company Kering has owned Gucci, without any involvement from the founding Gucci family.
Does Maison Gucci de Ridley Scott present family history?
Although the Gucci family do not own the brand that bears its namesake, Maurizio’s ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani still makes $ 1 million a year from the company.
Reggiani’s $ 1 million annual income stems from a deal with the Gucci Empire in 1993.
Ridley Scott’s 2021 film House of Gucci chronicles the family feud that ultimately led to the death of Guccio’s grandson, Patrizia’s conviction, and Gucci’s change of ownership.
The crime drama stars Lady Gaga, Salma Hayek, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Al Pacino and more.
House of Gucci hits theaters on November 24, 2021 and will be available to stream on Paramount Plus at a later date.
